LOCAL COMPANY SEES INCREASE IN BUSINESS FOLLOWING SWINE FLU OUTBREAK

Local distribution company PC Howard, a member of Palletways, the number one pallet network in Europe, has reported a 155% increase in the volume of goods it carries on behalf of medical supplier Bioguard Hygiene Solutions since the beginning of May.

The increase is a result of concern over the swine flu outbreak that saw Bioguard, which manufactures cleaning and infection control products for the health sector, inundated with orders for extra products from hospitals and health care customers across the UK.

Both based in Northampton, PC Howard works closely with Bioguard Hygiene Solutions to carry out deliveries throughout the UK and to Europe, utilising PC Howard’s membership of the Palletways network.

Bruce Macmillan, Business Development Manager at PC Howard, says: “What this shows is the importance of having a distribution company that understands your business. This knowledge, and the flexibility we are able to offer, means that we are able to respond to their requirements, even when they are faced with a sudden change in circumstances.”

PC Howard is one of 100 plus Palletways members – all independent transport companies with local knowledge and expertise – which make up the UK distribution network and provide a range of express delivery services including next day, economy and timed delivery options.  All the members deliver small consignments of palletised goods to market faster and more cost effectively than traditional haulage methods.

Stuart Hay, Managing Director at Bioguard, says: “During the time the swine flu scare was at its highest, we took the equivalent of three months worth of orders in two weeks.

“Our needs were two fold, we needed to bring extra raw materials in so that we could manufacture more, and we needed to ship manufactured goods out to clients as quickly as possible.  Knowing that we could rely on PC Howard to make this happen was of vital importance to our company.”

Palletways, which was set up in 1994, has 270 plus depots across the UK and mainland Europe and handles circa 21,000 pallets a day through eight hub facilities across Europe.  The company’s distribution networks in the UK and mainland Europe are supported by an unrivalled and fully integrated IT infrastructure, which allows customers to track and trace consignments using the internet.
